Discussion: 50 yr old Ohio player looking to see what is out there as far as Major + teams

Hey 17;
Why not check out the SILVER LEAGUE (barberton,Ohio..500 members and 35 teams).

http://silverleaguesoftball.com/

You can't bring your team in as a unit but there are currently individual players from the BUCKEYE CLASSICS;OHIO SILVERADO's; STEEL DAWGS; MITCHEM's 65's;ECSM PROPERTIES (SMITH ELECTRIC); BRENNAN"S AKRON 70's; AKRON 75's travel teams playing on different teams in the League.

Your 50's Division is a double-header league either on Monday or Wednesday night (can't remember the day). Same for the 55's league.

Although you can't go in as a team (it is a draft league), you will probably have at least two-or-three of you on the same team (eight team league)..the important thing isn't so much that you are playing as a team but rather that you are playing somewhere.

The complex is the same complex THEE BUCKEYE CLASSIC is played. Four fields, lights, dugouts and 300-ft fences. The season is 24-games plus league play-offs and league tournament. Starts in May end in August, also has a Fall League.

Check it out

This should be an easy fix. On this web site, the menu across the top lists home, tournaments, new. league, etc... click on "leagues" and then click on Florida.

There are tons of leagues listed there, just find the ones close to you and click on it...should give you info you need.

If still no luck..Tom Peterson looks to be the Senior League contact in the Tampa area.

I was just responding to someone looking for info about JR Trucking..if you are inquiring about our AA/AAA tournament in June, we already have 80 teams and are filled up in the 70's,60's and 50's with only a few spots left in the 65's (3) and 55's(4). Thanks for offering though

Discussion: Preferred Tournament format

Jar:

We had used the complete round robin format at our tournament the past three years but this year we are switching to pool and round robin.

The reason being a lot of time on the second day, teams who are a couple of hours from home and find themselves 1-3 or 0-4 just pack it in and head home.

This causes problems for teams who are still in the hunt and were scheduled to play those teams later in the day.

It does have its advantages but can also cause a big problem if teams leave.

Don't want to list our tournament name because SSUSA would delete this info.

Discussion: Rotator Cuff Advice

I'll tell you why my surgeon is so great...one of the players on our team is the biggest malpractice lawyer in this area.

If anybody on our team has to see a heart doctor or surgeon, he always says, "Check with me first because I sue all the quacks, so I know who the good ones are."

So we all go to the same surgeon and heart doctor he goes to...works pretty good

Discussion: Rotator Cuff Advice

Larry:

Had it both ways. Three years ago had my right shoulder tendon (throwing arm) diagnosed at 80% due to fraying (result I guess of over 3,000 softball games since I was 15).

Went with therapy on that one. Had to alter my throwing to more of a sidearm or 3/4 which meant no more outfield play. Forgot to mention I'm 72 and still playing with no pain.

Last April I dove for a ball and felt pain in my left shoulder but didn't think much more about it. However, after being able to hit the ball 290-310 on a good swing, it was now 250-260. Thought it must be in my swing but never got the pop back. Lived on advil the rest of the year also...lots of pain in the morning.

Finished the season in September and had an MRI...result two of the four tendons out of the rotato were completely severed.

With severed tendons you have no choice, needed an operation to have them repaired if I wanted to continue playing softball.

Operation was a 3 1/2 job in October and am now going through therapy and expect to be playing again in April (according to my surgeon).

Would vote for the surgery for you and with therapy you could make it back by JUNE. Really think that is the way to go.

Anyway good luck

Discussion: Softball Legend Stan Harvey has passed away......

I also remember watching STAN and the rest of the HOWARD's team playing at Firestone Stadium in Akron. What a stud he was.

I even bought a HOWARD FURNITURE bat that I still have..now swinging a Miken, I don't know how in the heck I was ever able to swing that Silver Howard Firniture bat with the green writing that was a 36oz -34.

It is sad to see the legends leave us. It is because of them that we are all playing today.

Will say a paryer for him and his family tonight.

Discussion: Question about your "LEAGUE" rules

Gary K:

Forget about the Akron/Barberton League to take your team to. The Silver League is a 500-member League 45-and-up with Five Leagues broken into age divisions (eight teams in the majority of the divsvions with six-or-seven in the other two). It is also a DRAFT LEAGUE...teams are redrafted each year, so no way could you bring a team in intact.

There are a few Off-the-wall house rules in the 75+ division which are different from tournament ball but works well in the house league.

Also the home-run-rule is a one-up in the league.

You may also want to check the Golden (?) League in Niles/Youngstown.

Looking forward to seeing your tournament team again in June.

If you have any questions on the Silver League..give me a call...you have my number.

You were also right about the ages...Art will get very little response, if any, if nobody knows what age division he is talking about entering.

It is the INDY CROWNS AA team out of Indianapolis.

If you are looking for a great group of guys to play with, who also have a very good chance to win the 70 AA title you should hook up with ART's team. You will have a very enjoyable time.

Topic: Tournaments
Discussion: Largely attended tourney's

Your best bet is to go the the SSUSA, SPA and ISSA tournament sites.

SPA lists attendance and scores of all qualifiers and nationals; ISSA lists attending teams of all tournaments and SSUSA lists the attendees and scores of all their Nationals and a few qualifiers.

According to the tournaments and attendees listed at all three tournaments (and subtracting 40-and-under and women's teams)the biggest midwest/Eastern draws woulde be, of course, SSUSA's Fort Myers Winter Nationals (147) and TOC as well as SPA's Dalton Nationals (140).

ISSA and qualifier tournament attendance figures of the top ten are:

1. ISSA Worlds, Manassas - 76
2. THEE SPA Buckeye Classic Qualifier, Akron - 72 * only AA and AAA teams
3. SPA Glen Burnie Qualifier,Maryland 58
4. ISSA World Cup, Virginia 57
5. SSUSA Midwest Championships, Kansas 51
6. SSUSA Northern Nationals, Michigan 47
7. SSUSA Cape May Tournament, NJ - 43
8. SSUSA Eastern Nationals, Raleigh 41
9. SPA Heart of Ohio Qualifier, Columbus,Ohio - 39 * only AA and AAA teams
10. SPA Sylvania, Ohio Qualifier 35 Only AA and AAA teams.

But as I mentioned, your best bet are to visit all three organizations tournament web page where the info should be available.

Discussion: O.K., WHO ARE THE MOST SOLID AA TEAMS AND ARE YOU HEADED TO DALTON THIS THURSDAY? (especially 60 AA)

You have to look at the bright side of this post.

SSUSA had finally decided it was OK to list other organizations scores on this web site.

You are correct...but I don't know the scores from the other two SPA tournaments they were blown out of (I think one was Sylvania).

You may be interested that SPA has PFEIFFER GREY SOCKS 75's listed Major but SSUSA has them AAA.

Different organizations have different ratings based on what happened in their tournaments.

I think what might have made that "crazy" person drop DOC MARTENS to AA were the following results from two SPA tournaments:
U.S.Utility 18 DEoc Martens 9; Brooklins 21 Doc M 13; Hawks Nest 21 Doc's 17; Windsor 25 Doc's 20; Brantford 15 Doc's 13; Hawks Nest 17 Docs 2; Siveradoos 18 Docs 2; Miama 25 Docs 8; Miamai 21 Docs 19 and Docs 22 Legends 21.

Being outscored by a 20.2 to 12.5 score was probably another reason. Last year they were very strong but as you can see..this year they are not.

In the 60 AA, I think THE BOMB SQUAD, DOC MARTENS and DAYTON LEGENDS are strong contenders.

In the 60AAA the WINDSOR CHIEFS

In the 50's DAYTON LEGENDS VICKERS

In the 70's BRENNAN'S AKRON 70's.

Discussion: Irony and inequity of ratings

Let me take a shot at it and I am just guessing.

It looks like the Classics and Seniors were raised to AAA by SSUSA in July. One had just won the Midwest nationals and the other the Brickyard. so maybe that caused the ratins increase along with runs scored and differential.

Both teams were rated AA by SPA last year and I can't find where they played a SPA tournament in 2011 to have their ratings evaluated, so they probably would stay at AA until they win a National or play three SPA tournaments for an evaluation.

Hamel's,I think may have had their AA rating changed by SSUSA after the TOC in February.

Although Hamels played a number of SPA tournaments, the only one they won was THEE Buckeye Classic beating DONNEYBROOK 13-6 in the finals and COSSA 12-7 prior to that. So although winning a tournament, their scoring and run differential over THEE Classic and two other SPA tournaments probably did not justify moving up to AAA.

Despite what people believe. the organizations are not bound to honor another organizations ratings. A perfect example is the ISSA ratings compared to SPA and SSUSA.

Even if a team wins another organization's National championship, other organizations apparently do not have to honor that achievement and raise their rating either.

I do know if there is a major difference in the artings, SSUSA and SPA do communicate with each other to correct the problem if possible.

Hope that helps and again it is just my observation and not a factual response.
